A walk for Mwalimu: Wafula champions Teachers safety and safe spaces

Nairobi, Saturday— The streets from Nairobi Primary School to Nyayo Stadium pulsed with white T-shirts, school crests, and placards as more than a thousand teachers, students, peace champions, and community-service partners braved the early-morning chill for the 10th annual Kenya Red Cross Charity Walk. The route threaded through the CBD under this year’s banner: “Safety First, Safety Always for the Community.”

At the heart of the procession strode Mr. Peter Wafula—senior teacher at Dagoretti High School, Nairobi KUPPET–chair aspirant, and a man who has never missed a single edition of the walk. His presence carried a triple mandate:

1. Teacher–Advocate – “A safe space must exist not only for learners but for every teacher and staff member who serves them,” Wafula said, noting that security drills, first-aid readiness, and psychosocial support should be standard in every school.

2. Peace Coordinator – As former Nairobi County Amani Coordinator under the Ministry of Education and the National Cohesion & Integration Commission (NCIC), Wafula helped seed peace clubs across the county. Those clubs, now marching beside him, showcased skits and chants on conflict resolution along the route.

3. Chairman, Nairobi County Teachers Forum (CBO) – Representing teacher welfare, his CBO distributed branded water bottles and flyers on mental-health resources, underscoring his campaign slogan “Mwalimu Kwanza” (Teacher First).

> “Teachers are counsellors, peacebuilders, and first responders in school crises,” Wafula told reporters at Nyayo Stadium. “When we invest in their safety and wellbeing, we safeguard the future of every child.”

Kenya Red Cross Secretary-General Dr. Asha Mohammed hailed educators as “front-line humanitarians” and confirmed that funds raised will equip forty Nairobi schools with new first-aid kits and emergency-response training.

With drums rolling and vuvuzelas sounding the finish, the day closed not just as a charity milestone but as a vivid reminder of Wafula’s pledge: strong teachers, stronger classrooms, safer communities.
