Beyond the Classroom: Mr. Wafula Champions Sports as Therapy for Teachers

In a profession that often demands more than it gives back, Mr. Peter Wafula is reminding teachers that they, too, deserve to breathe, laugh, run, and heal.

As the Athletics Championships Coordinator in Dagoretti Sub-county, Chief Starter at Nairobi Region Secondary Schools Sports Association, and a long-serving teacher at Dagoretti High School, Mr. Wafula has turned his love for sports into a lifeline for fellow educators.

He knows firsthand that the pressures teachers face—long hours, emotional fatigue, and endless responsibilities—can wear anyone down. That’s why he’s helping build spaces where teachers don’t just survive, they thrive.

Through his Community-Based Organisation (CBO), Wafula mobilizes teachers across Nairobi to participate in athletics, walks, and friendly competitions—not for medals, but for mental refreshment, bonding, and joy.

> “A healthy teacher is a powerful teacher,” he says. “If we don’t take care of ourselves, we cannot give our best in class or in life.”

Mr. Wafula’s message is clear: Well-being is not a luxury for teachers—it’s a right. And through sports, he’s proving that when teachers move together, they rise together.
